NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team has earned the No. 5 seed in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Tennis Playoffs and will visit No. 4 seed Macalester College in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
St. Olaf (8-7, 6-4 MIAC) secured its spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the 14th time in 16 seasons by going 6-4 in conference play, breaking a tie with the College of Saint Benedict for the No. 5 seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over the Bennies. The Oles will head to Macalester (11-6, 7-3 MIAC) to open the tournament on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Hayden Courts in St. Paul.
Per MIAC policy, no admission is charged for postseason tennis matches. The match will be
streamed live online courtesy of the Macalester Sports Information Department.
Wednesday's other quarterfinal match sees third-seeded Bethel University (15-4, 7-3 MIAC) host sixth-seeded Saint Ben's (9-7, 6-4) at 3:30 p.m. in Arden Hills. Following the quarterfinals, the highest remaining seed will take on second-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College (17-12, 9-1 MIAC) in the semifinals on Friday afternoon in St. Peter, while the lowest remaining seed will challenge top-seeded and regular-season champion Carleton College (18-0, 10-0 MIAC) in Northfield.
St. Olaf is appearing in the MIAC Playoffs for the fourth-straight season and its 14 appearances over the last 16 seasons are the third-most in the conference behind only Gustavus (16) and Carleton (15 – did not compete in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Oles are 10-13 all-time in the MIAC Playoffs and have won at least one match in eight of their previous 13 appearances. Last season, fifth-seeded St. Olaf fell by a 5-0 score to fourth-seeded Bethel in the quarterfinals.
Macalester is in the MIAC Playoffs for just the fourth time since 2007 but has qualified for the tournament in three of the last five seasons. The Scots are 1-3 in their previous three appearances, with their lone win coming in the quarterfinals in 2008.
Wednesday's quarterfinal will be the second postseason meeting between St. Olaf and Macalester. In 2021, the Oles became the first No. 6 seed to advance in the MIAC Playoffs by knocking off the third-seeded Scots by a 5-3 score. Macalester edged St. Olaf by a
5-4 margin in the regular-season meeting between the two programs last Tuesday in St. Paul thanks, in part, to a pair of super-tiebreaker victories in singles.
