Volleyball takes down Dubuque in four to snap skid

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The St. Olaf College volleyball team snapped its three-match losing streak by picking up a four-set victory over the University of Dubuque on the final day of the Loras Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Stoltz Sports Center.

Senior Catherine Moore, first year Maren Miller, and senior Anysia Caille all reached double figures in kills for St. Olaf (5-4), which held Dubuque (8-4) to an attack percentage of .118 in the match. The Oles also held an advantage of 8-3 in aces in the win.

Senior Selena Rodriguez moved into a tie for 10th in program history in career digs by racking up 26 to equal the total of 1,344 of Kirstee Rotty '13. The 26 digs were a season-high total for Rodriguez, who has had at least 14 digs in all nine of the Oles' matches this fall.

Playing in her home state, Miller recorded a season-high 13 kills, easily surpassing her previous high total of five, and hit .308 for St. Olaf, while also contributing six digs, a pair of block assists, and an ace. Moore registered a match-high 14 kills, while Caille added 11 of her own.

Sophomore Paige Christophersen handed out a season-high 26 assists and fell one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Junior Maycie Rogers tallied 15 digs and sophomore Morgan Ryan made 12 digs to go with three aces and three assists.

Both teams hit below .100 in a see-saw opening set that saw St. Olaf overcome a 24-20 deficit by closing the set with a 6-0 run. In a set that included eight ties and four lead changes, the Spartans broke a 20-20 tie by winning four points in a row, but a service error kept the Oles in the set. St. Olaf proceeded to save three more set points, the final one on an ace by Christophersen, before getting back-to-back attack errors by Dubuque to claim the set. Moore and Miller combined for nine kills in the set.

St. Olaf hit a match-best .273 in the second set, as Caille led five Oles with multiple kills in the set with five. With the score tied at 17-17, Rodriguez had a pair of aces during an 8-0 set-ending run for St. Olaf. Rodriguez made nine digs in the set to go with the two late aces.

Dubuque limited St. Olaf to a .000 attack percentage in the third set to extend the match to a fourth set despite five kills from Moore in the set. Already leading by one, the Spartans strung together four-straight points to stretch their lead to 20-15 and led by at least three the rest of the way.

In the fourth, St. Olaf bounced back by holding Dubuque to a .075 clip offensively to close out the four-set win. The Oles led by as many as seven at 18-11 before the Spartans closed the gap to three, but St. Olaf won the next four points to build up its cushion. Miller had five kills on six errorless swings in the set to pace the Oles.

St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a home date with Bethel University on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. on Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. There will be a JV match beforehand starting at 5 p.m.
