DELAWARE, Ohio – In its first of two top-25 matchups in Ohio, the No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team suffered a late 2-1 defeat to No. 24-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday evening at Jay Martin Soccer Complex.
Ohio Wesleyan (1-1-0) scored just 1:31 in and played the final 66-plus minutes with a one-player advantage, but St. Olaf (1-2-0) got a free-kick goal from senior
Hakeem Morgan in the 57th minute to tie the game. Moments after the Oles nearly grabbed a late lead, Christopher Guerra netted the game-winning goal for the Battling Bishops in the 84th minute.
The game was the first-ever meeting between the two programs and was St. Olaf's second against a nationally-ranked team in three games to start the season.
Less than two minutes in, Ohio Wesleyan capitalized on the first shot of the game when Landon Kuhn finished off a cross from in front to give the hosts an early advantage. A 24th-minute red card gave the Battling Bishops a one-player advantage, but the Battling Bishop's lead remained at 1-0 at the halftime break.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, St. Olaf pulled level on a 25-yard free kick from Morgan that nestled in the lower-left corner of the net. The goal was Morgan's fourth of the season and the 25th of his career, moving the Costa Rican into a three-way tie for seventh on the program's all-time scoring list.
The score remained at 1-1 until Guerra got on the end of a centering pass from the right and fired the ball in under the crossbar in the 84th minute. The goal game just seconds after senior
Casey McCloskey nearly gave the Oles a lead, but Mason Taylor got down to thwart McCloskey's effort from the left side of the box.
Ohio Wesleyan held edges of 14-11 in shots and 7-5 in shots on goal in the game after playing with an extra player for over an hour. Taylor picked up the victory with a four-save evening for the Battling Bishops, while junior
Peter Forseth took the loss with a five-save night for the Oles.
St. Olaf wraps up its trip to Ohio with another nationally-ranked matchup, as the Oles face fifth-ranked Kenyon College on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. CT.
