Volleyball makes it two sweeps in as many days

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team hit a season-best .388 on its way to a 25-15, 25-20, 25-14 sweep of Martin Luther College in non-conference action on Saturday at Skoglund Center.

After a 3-0 win over Luther College on Friday night, St. Olaf (15-6) made it two sweeps in as many nights by tallying 43 kills and just five errors on its way to the sweep of Martin Luther (6-17). The Oles have won each of the last 13 meetings in the series going back to 2014 and have lost just four sets to the Knights over that span.

Sophomore Lilah Van Scoyoc was the lone Ole in double figures in kills in the win with 13 while hitting an even .400. Junior Holly Jelinek and first year Mehsa Krause added eight kills apiece, with Kraus hitting .538 in the match. First year Carlie Beckstrand chipped in with seven kills in a match where no Ole had more than one attack error.

Junior Morgan Ryan picked up 17 digs, five assists, and four aces, while senior Kathryn Deist contributed 12 digs, two assists, and two aces. Junior Paige Christophersen and sophomore Skylar Fildew combined for 33 assists and 13 digs while splitting setting duties.

Martin Luther hit .333 with 12 kills and just two errors in the opening set, but St. Olaf was even better with a .484 attack percentage on 15 kills and no errors to win the set 25-15. Van Scoyoc, Beckstrand, Krause, and Jelinek all had at least three kills in the opener, which St. Olaf broke open with a 7-1 run to go up 14-6 midway through. Ryan hit three consecutive aces to cap the run.

St. Olaf cooled off slightly to a .344 attack percentage in the second set but limited Martin Luther to a .146 clip to go up two sets to none. After the visitors overcame a five-point deficit to tie the set at 16-16, the Oles won nine of the final 13 points to win the closest set of the match.

In the third, St. Olaf jumped out to a 7-2 lead and led by at least three the rest of the way to finish off the sweep. Van Scoyoc and Krause combined for nine kills and Ryan made seven digs in the set.

The Oles will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a home match against Macalester College on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
