Oles win 18-of-26 swimming events at CCC Invite

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win 18 of the 26 swimming events at the Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic on Saturday at Northfield Middle School.

The St. Olaf men's and women's teams won nine swimming events apiece, led by junior Nick Starcevich being part of first-place finishes in all four of his swims. Starcevich was one of seven Oles to be part of multiple event victories for St. Olaf at the unscored meet that included Carleton College and Luther College.

Starcevich was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (21.96) and 100-yard freestyle (48.97) and swam on St. Olaf's first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:38.42) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.42). Fifth-year senior Marcus Hauck and sophomore Jack Homme joined Starcevich on both relays, as the 200-yard medley relay edged Carleton by just 0.24 seconds.

Homme added a win in the 100-yard butterfly (54.05), while Hauck was the first to touch the wall in the 100-yard backstroke (54.50). Junior Aiden Yung won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.17) and 400-yard individual medley (4:25.29) and was the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.67), while also swimming the second leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay. First year Travis Elling picked up a win in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.53) and was second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.54).

Sophomore Katie Homme, sophomore Alana Schmitzer, and first year McKenna Hultgren all won two events for the St. Olaf women. Homme claimed the 100-yard freestyle (55.25) and 200-yard freestyle (2:01.04) events, Schmitzer swept the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.65) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.08), and Hultgren won both the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.07) and 200-yard butterfly (2:13.89) events.

Junior Paige Steenblock recorded two top-two swims, winning the 400-yard individual medley by nearly 10 seconds in 4:48.90 and finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.55). First year Olivia Small was another event winner for St. Olaf in the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.40), while sophomore Della Schmidt, first year Lauren Russell, junior Zoe Roberts, and first year Karissa Bell posted the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.37).

The Oles will head to Collegeville for their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) dual meets of the season at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The men will take on Saint John's, while the women will simultaneously match up with the College of Saint Benedict and St. Catherine University.
