Five-goal flurry boosts men's soccer to 5-1 win at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team responded to conceding an early goal by scoring the final five goals of the game to down Macalester College by a 5-1 score in a regionally-ranked Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Macalester Stadium.

After Hans Haenicke gave Macalester (9-3-0, 3-2-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, St. Olaf (8-3-1, 4-0-0 MIAC) scored twice late in the first half and three more times early in the second half to extend its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). The Oles were ranked just outside of the top 25 in this week's United Soccer Coaches national poll and checked in at No. 3 in the Region IX rankings, while the Scots were right behind at No. 4 in the region.

Haenicke put the hosts on top a little more than five minutes with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, but St. Olaf overwhelmed Macalester with five goals in the span of 20:30 of game time over the middle of the game. The win moved the Oles to 4-0-1 in the last five meetings with the Scots.

Senior Shea Bechtel ran his tally to five goals in the last three games by scoring twice for St. Olaf, while younger brother Ryan Bechtel picked up a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to four games. Junior Dimitri Nair also registered a goal and an assist for the second game in a row for the Oles.

With Macalester holding a 1-0 lead, St. Olaf pulled level in the 35th minute when junior Caspar Olseth nodded in a Nair corner kick at the back post for his second goal of the season and the 11th of his career. Nair was again at the center of the Oles' second goal, as the junior was tripped while splitting two Macalester defenders on the right side of the box in the final minute of the half. Shea Bechtel took the spot kick and converted for the second time this season to send St. Olaf into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The Oles found the back of the net three times in the span of 4:30 early in the second half to break the game wide open. The Bechtel brothers combined for the team's third goal in the 51st minute when Ryan Bechtel got on the end of a long diagonal from fifth-year senior Clemente Arcuch Puig, beat a defender, and squared the ball for Shea Bechtel to put home for his team-leading seventh of the season.

Nair grabbed his second goal of the season a little more than three minutes later by robbing the ball off a stumbling Macalester defender and slotting the ball home. Ryan Bechtel capped the five-goal flurry by heading in a free kick from first year Lucas Montera in 1:17 after Nair's goal.

Senior Peter Forseth moved into a tie with Ben Bramam '17 for the program's all-time record with 35 wins with a season-high seven-save effort for St. Olaf. Sam Price made three spots in the loss for the Scots.

The Oles will be back in action at UW-Platteville, which was ranked No. 6 regionally this week, on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
