St. Olaf inducts five individuals, two teams into Athletic Hall of Fame

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf College Athletic Department inducted five former student-athletes and two teams into the St. Olaf Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2024 on Friday evening as part of Homecoming and Family Weekend.

The 2024 Class was made up of Jon Campbell '00 (tennis), Horace Gant '08 (football/track and field), Emma Lee '13 (cross country/Nordic skiing/track and field), John Schantzen '10 (track and field/football), and Karen Schwartzbauer '87 (soccer/basketball), as well as the 1979 and 1980 women's cross country teams. This year marked the first year that teams were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

"The Hall of Fame ceremony encapsulated who we are as Oles," said St. Olaf Interim Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Kelly Mahlum. "The room was filled with hugs, smiles, and genuine laughter by our inductees. The memories of their time on the Hill, with their teammates, and their appreciation for the opportunity and experiences that intercollegiate athletics gave them were shared by all. Our inductees serve as inspiration for current and future Oles, and I want to express my sincere appreciation to them for all that they did on the Hill and what they continue to do as Oles."

The inductees were honored at a ceremony held in the Black and Gold Ballrooms in Buntrock Commons. Before the ceremony, the inductees, their friends and families, prior Hall of Fame inductees, and other guests enjoyed a social hour and dinner served by Bon Appetit. The induction ceremony is available to watch on-demand here.

Jon Campbell '00 is one of two singles All-Americans in the history of the St. Olaf men's tennis program and is the only Ole to earn two All-America accolades in singles. He qualified for three national tournaments, earning a spot in the field of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships in 1997 and 1998 and placing fifth nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national tournament in 1998. Campbell competed as St. Olaf's number one singles player all four years and was ranked in the top 10 nationally following the fall 1998 ITA national tournament. Over the course of his career, Campbell went 42-5 in singles and 33-13 in doubles in regular-season dual matches.

Campbell made the singles quarterfinals of the ITA Midwestern Regional in each of his four seasons, highlighted by winning the title in 1998 and finishing as the runner-up in 1997. He also advanced to the semifinals of the regional tournament in each of his final two seasons and was a doubles quarterfinalist as a sophomore. Campbell was the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) runner-up at No. 1 singles twice (1996, 1998) and won the conference title at No. 1 doubles in 1999-00 with Pete Nau.

Horace Gant '08 is the most productive wide receiver in the history of the St. Olaf football program and is one of three D3football.com All-Americans in program history. A D3football.com Third Team All-American and First Team All-West Region honoree in 2007, Gant is the only four-time All-MIAC selection in program history and one of two wide receivers to be a four-time all-conference honoree, a feat achieved by only 11 student-athletes in recorded conference history.

St. Olaf's all-time leader in receiving yards (3,061), Gant also ranks tied for first in receiving touchdowns (27), second in receptions (185), third in receptions per game (4.62), ninth in yards per reception (16.55), and 10th in all-purpose yards (3,372), while holding the single-season mark with 12 touchdown catches in 2007. He went on to sign with the then-Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2008 and was signed by the then-St. Louis Rams in 2009. Gant also was a sprinter for St. Olaf's indoor track and field team in 2005 and 2006. He currently ranks tied for sixth on St. Olaf's all-time indoor list in the 55-meter dash (6.59) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (22.94), while also running on the second-ranked 4x200-meter relay (1:31.17).

Emma Lee '13 was an All-American in all three of her sports, collecting a total of 18 All-America accolades in her career, with three in cross country, one in track and field, and 14 in Nordic skiing. In cross country, Lee placed 10th nationally in 2010, 35th in 2011, and fifth in 2012, while also compiling four All-MIAC and four U.S. Track  & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region accolades. She is one of two Oles to be a four-time All-MIAC honoree in cross country, was part of a pair of top-10 national team finishes (8th in 2012, 10th in 2011) and the 2010 MIAC championship team, and holds the fastest six-kilometer time (21:19) in program history.

In track and field, Lee ran to All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run with a sixth-place finish in her senior season after finishing 13th and 10th, respectively, in the previous two seasons. A six-time All-MIAC honoree on the track, she also was the MIAC individual champion in the indoor 5,000-meter run and the outdoor 10,000-meter run as a senior, while adding runner-up finishes in the outdoor 5,000-meter run in 2011 and 2013. In Nordic, Lee was an All-American in eight of the nine individual events she competed in at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships, including winning three individual national titles by claiming the 8.5K Freestyle and 15K Classic in 2010 and the 8.5K Classic in 2013. She also earned First Team All-America honors in the combined standings by placing in the top five in each of her three seasons at the national championships, finishing second in 2010, fourth in 2013, and fifth in 2012, while helping the Oles to the team title in 2013 and top-three finishes in each of the other two years.

The 2010 indoor shot put national champion, John Schantzen '10 is one of eight Oles to win an individual national title in men's track and field and was an all-conference offensive lineman for St. Olaf's football team. Schantzen won the lone national title in the throws in program history with a still-standing school-record throw of 17.37 meters (57'), which came on the final throw with the national title already wrapped up. The five-time national qualifier was a three-time All-American in the shot put, adding a third-place finish outdoors in 2009 and a seventh-place finish indoors in 2008 to the national title.

A five-time MIAC shot put champion and two-time MIAC shot put runner-up, Schantzen also holds the outdoor school record in the event at 17.54 meters (57' 6 ½") and ranks sixth on St. Olaf's all-time indoor list in the weight throw (15.53m, 50' 11 ½"). He was also a three-year starter on the offensive line for St. Olaf and earned Second Team All-MIAC honors in 2008, while helping the Oles to a 27-13 overall record during his career. In 2010, Schantzen was named the inaugural recipient of the St. Olaf Athletic Department's Dave Hauck Award and received the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Karen Schwartzbauer '87 is the lone All-American in the history of the St. Olaf women's soccer program after collecting National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Third Team honors in 1986. Schwartzbauer is also one of three Oles to be named to the All-MIAC Team in each of her four collegiate seasons and landed NSCAA All-Area honors in her senior campaign. While complete statistics from her career are not available, Schwartzbauer is believed to be the all-time leader in goals, assists, and points.

Schwartzbauer racked up 19 goals and eight assists as a first year and 20 goals and eight assists as a junior, which rank as the top-two goal scoring seasons in recorded program history. She helped lead St. Olaf to the 1983 MIAC Tournament title and a runner-up finish the following year. Schwartzbauer was also a three-year letterwinner for the women's basketball program, scoring over 600 points in 81 career games.

The 1979 and 1980 women's cross country teams both won Midwest Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) state championships, placed in the top two at the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) Region VI Championships, and were the national runners-up at the AIAW Division III National Championships, while competing against programs from all NCAA Divisions before they were formed. In 1979, St. Olaf won the state title by 18 points behind a 1-2 finish from Beth Stronge and Leslie Seymour and had eight of the top-13 individual finishers. Led by a first-place finish from Stronge, the Oles had three of the top-four individuals and finished just one point behind Central College at the regional meet and went on to place second to Cal. State-Hayward at the AIAW Division III Championships with three individuals in the top eight.

The following year, St. Olaf edged St. Thomas by one point for the team title after Strong, Janet Ensrud, and Seymour all placed in the top four. At the regional meet, the Oles finished three points ahead of the Tommies behind three top-five performances that included a regional title by Seymour. St. Olaf posted its second consecutive second-place national finish, with Stronge, Seymour, and Ensrud all in the top eight. Both teams were coached by 2013 Hall of Fame inductee Chris Daymont and included three prior Hall of Fame inductees in Ensrud (1998 inductee), Seymour (1997 inductee), and Stronge (1997 inductee).
