Men's hockey gets first win of season in Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Senior Jonathan Young and junior Jonathan Panisa combined for three goals and an assist to lead the St. Olaf College men's hockey to its first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over UW-Eau Claire on Friday night at Hobbs Ice Arena.

Young scored twice and Panisa added a goal and an assist to lead the way offensively for St. Olaf (1-2-0), which got a 44-save effort from first year Matthew Malin at the other end to hold UW-Eau Claire (0-1-0) in check. The win over the Blugolds, who received votes in this week's USCHO.com national poll, was the third in the last four head-to-head meetings for the Oles.

Senior Connor Kalfhoff joined Young and Panisa with multi-point nights by picking up a pair of assists. Junior Pavel Karasek also tallied a goal to help St. Olaf to the win in a game in which UW-Eau Claire held a 45-18 advantage in shots on goal. Malin made 12 saves in the first, 21 in the second, and 11 more in the third to claim the first win of his career in his second collegiate start.

Young got the scoring started for St. Olaf at the 5:58 mark of the opening period by scoring in a 2-on-1 rush started by Panisa along the right boards, as Panisa slid the puck across to Young for his first of the night. The Blugolds tied the game at 8:17 of the second on a goal by Max Dronen, but Panisa broke the tie less than two minutes later by firing the puck after receiving a stretch pass from first year Simon Pollock.

The Oles added to their second lead of the night with just over three minutes remaining in the second when Karasek put home a rebound off a shot from Kalthoff from the right point for the second goal of his career to make it 3-1 after two. Malin's work between the pipes helped St. Olaf maintain the two-goal lead until Young scored an unassisted empty-netter on the power play with 1:01 remaining to complete the fourth two-goal game of his career.

St. Olaf will conclude its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) crossover weekend with a 7 p.m. puck drop at UW-Superior on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.
