MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior
Izzy Treanor won her third consecutive conference title in the women's one-meter diving as the St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were in action on the first full day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Championships on Thursday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Treanor completed a three-peat on the one-meter board by posting the top score on the day in both the prelims and finals sessions to become the first Ole in MIAC Championship annals to win three titles in either of the diving events. Senior
Hannah Richey gave St. Olaf a 1-2 finish in the event by finishing second to Treanor to collect her second consecutive All-MIAC accolade in the one-meter diving, improved by nearly 30 points in the finals after finishing fifth in the prelims.
The St. Olaf women recorded three All-MIAC and three Honorable Mention All-MIAC performances on the day to move up from a tie for fifth to third place with 199 points. The Oles enter Friday seven points ahead of St. Catherine University and 11 behind Macalester College. The St. Olaf men had two All-MIAC and one Honorable Mention All-MIAC results on Thursday and sat fourth with 172 points, 10 behind Carleton College and seven ahead of Macalester College.
Treanor recorded a winning score of 429.05 to finish a little over nine points ahead of Richey's score of 419.75. Treanor's first-place finish marked the fifth time in the last eight MIAC Championships an Ole has won the event. The reigning MIAC Women's Diver of the Year also became the second MIAC women's diver to win three consecutive crowns on the one-meter board, joining Angie Soucek of Carleton College from 2000-02.
Sophomore
Paige Steenblock turned in a second consecutive All-MIAC swim in the 200-yard individual medley, placing third in 2:10.53. The sophomore, who was the conference runner-up last season, was sixth in the prelims (2:12.63) before rising to third in the final. Senior
Rachel Stumpf finished just two-tenths of a second behind Steenblock in 2:10.73 to take fourth and secure Honorable Mention All-MIAC placement. First year
Samantha Sylvester also qualified for the final in the event and took eighth (2:13.37).
Senior
Tatum Hauck earned her second Honorable Mention All-MIAC accolade in the 500-yard freestyle by taking fourth in 5:12.61. Hauck was one of three Oles to finish in the top 10 as senior
Charlotte Thomson was seventh (5:15.26) and sophomore
Ellie Porrata was 10th (5:21.98). Thomson and Sylvester made up half of St. Olaf's Honorable Mention All-MIAC fourth-place 400-yard medley relay (3:59.30) that also included junior
Ellen Varley and first year
Alana Schmitzer.
In his first event at the MIAC Championships, sophomore
William Wallace sprinted to a third-place finish and All-MIAC honors in the 50-yard freestyle (21.01). Wallace posted the joint second-fastest time in the prelims (21.06) before shaving off five one-hundredths of a second in the finals. Wallace also anchored St. Olaf's all-conference third-place 400-yard medley relay (3:28.71), which included Hauck, sophomore
Nick Starcevich, and senior
Daniel Bloedow.
Sophomore
Aiden Yung collected his first individual conference accolade with an honorable-mention sixth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.36).
Day three of the MIAC Championships again includes a prelims session at 10:30 a.m. and a finals session at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16.
