ORLANDO, Fla. – In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the St. Olaf College men's tennis team was defeated 8-1 by Union College (N.Y.) on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
First year
Marjan Veldic picked up the lone point for St. Olaf (2-7) in the match with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles. After sweeping the three doubles matches, Union (3-6) won all four of the singles matches that went to super tiebreakers to earn the victory.
Veldic improved to 5-4 this season with a 7-5, 6-2 win at second singles for the Oles. The Garnett Chargers won all three doubles matches by at least four games and won super tiebreakers at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 singles to win a match that was closer than the 8-1 score indicated.
Sophomore
Bogdan Vizoli and senior
Jakub Belik both won the second sets of their matches before falling in super tiebreakers, while first years
Cathal Mee and
Ryan Birnesser took their opening sets before dropping the deciders. Birnesser's match with Christian Crowder at No. 6 singles featured two tiebreak sets before the super tiebreaker.
St. Olaf continues its trip to The Sunshine State against Warner University on Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m. CDT.
