Salfer fifth, Klein 11th in MIAC Heptathlon

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Fifth-year senior Rebekah Salfer was fifth and first year Aubree Klein finished 11th as the duo represented the St. Olaf College women's track and field team in the heptathlon to kick off the 2024 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday at Carleton College's Laird Stadium.

In the field of 18 competitors, Salfer racked up 3,920 points and Klein amassed 3,210 points over the two-day, seven-event competition. Salfer's top-five heptathlon finish was her fourth in a row, while Klein competed in her first collegiate heptathlon. Salfer's fifth-place finish earned St. Olaf four points in the team standings.

In wet conditions on Thursday, Salfer compiled 2,149 points through the first four events to sit fourth, led by runner-up finishes in both the shot put (10.04m, 32' 11 ¼") and the 200-meter dash (27.36) in the final two events of the day. Klein was 12th with 1,955 points after Thursday's events, with her top finish coming with a seventh-place result in the 200-meter dash (28.16). Klein opened the competition with a personal-best time by half a second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.71).

On Friday, Salfer fouled on her first two jumps in the long jump before posting an eighth-place jump of 4.63 meters (15' 2 ¼"). After a seventh-place performance in the javelin throw (23.10m, 75' 9"), the fifth-year senior cemented her top-five finish by winning the 800-meter run in 2:29.96, finishing over four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Klein closed out the competition with a near seven-second PR of 2:37.48 in the 800-meter run to place fifth for her highest placement of the two days.

St. Olaf hosts the Ole Open on Saturday, May 4, with field events starting at 12 p.m. and track events at 1 p.m.
