Metcalf and Willis in double figures, Oles fall to Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Addison Metcalf and sophomore Chris Willis both equaled or set a season high in scoring for the St. Olaf College men's basketball team in an 82-56 loss to Concordia-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

Metcalf led St. Olaf (1-13, 0-5 MIAC) with a season-high 14 points and Willis matched his highest output as an Ole with 12, but Concordia (6-8, 2-3 MIAC) had four double-figure scorers on its way to the victory. The Cobbers shot 50.8 percent (33-for-65) from the field, including going 10-for-20 (50.0 percent) from behind the arc.

Metcalf went 7-for-8 at the free-throw line as part of his 14-point performance, which also included three rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocks, one of which was on a transition dunk attempt by the Cobbers in the second half. Willis shot 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range to add 12 points off the bench, matching his season high from earlier this season against UW-Whitewater.

Junior Kobe Kirk, who reached the 1,000-point mark for his career on Wednesday night, was in double figures for the 13th time in 14 games this season with 10 points for the Oles, who shot 33.3 percent (19-for-57) as a team. St. Olaf matched its season-low total with just nine turnovers in the loss.

Jacob Cook led the way for Concordia with a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double while shooting 8-for-13 from the field. Rowan Nelson added 14 points and seven rebounds, Peyton Belka chipped in with 11 points, and Jackson Loge had 10 points for the Cobbers.

Metcalf scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half for St. Olaf, which trailed 38-28 at the break after Cook and Nelson combined for 24 first-half points for Concordia. The Cobbers surged out to an 8-0 lead over the first two-plus minutes and led for the entirety of the half, with their largest lead being a dozen late on.

Concordia started the second half on a 7-0 run to blow the game open and led by at least 15 the rest of the way. Willis had nine of his 12 points in the second half for the Oles, while Kirk posted eight of his 10 after the break.

St. Olaf will host Hamline University on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at Skoglund Center.
