NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team completed an unbeaten crossover weekend against Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opposition with a 3-3 tie against UW-Stout on Saturday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (7-6-2) rallied from 3-1 down to tie the game on a third-period goal by junior
Gunnar Johnson and killed off a UW-Stout (9-6-2) power play over the final two minutes of regulation and into overtime. After neither team scored in the extra session, the Blue Devils won the shootout, which does not affect the result in non-conference games, by a 2-1 margin in four rounds.
Johnson and senior
Tyler Cooper had a goal and an assist apiece for St. Olaf, which got two assists from first year
Nicholas Sewecke as well. First year
Nick Hatton added the other goals for the Oles.
St. Olaf struck first when Cooper tipped in a shot from senior
Connor Kalthoff, who was playing in his 100th collegiate game, at 9:09 of the opening period for Cooper's third goal of the season. UW-Stout struck back with a power-play goal from Nicholas Stevens at 16:56 and an even-strength goal from Kullan Daikawa at 18:50 to carry a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Blue Devils capitalized on a turnover in the St. Olaf defensive zone with an unassisted goal by Noah Tyrrell 6:44 in to extend their lead to 3-1. The Oles got the goal back on a right-circle shot by Hatton off feeds from Cooper and Johnson just 16 seconds into a power play less than two minutes later to make it a 3-2 game after two. The goal was the second of the season for Hatton.
St. Olaf outshot UW-Stout by a 12-4 margin in shots on goal in the third and nearly tied the game six minutes in when junior
Jonathan Panisa hit the left post while open in front of the net. It did not take the Oles long to tie the game after the near miss, however, as Johnson's shot from the left side trickled over the line at the 6:52 mark. First year
Panayioti Efraimidis and Sewecke earned the assists on Johnson's second goal of the season.
The Oles got a power play midway through the third period but could never get set up before first year
Simon Pollock drew a save from UW-Stout goaltender Tyler Masternak in a 2-on-1 rush with less than eight minutes remaining. St. Olaf killed off a minor penalty taken with 1:43 to go, which carried over with 17 seconds of 4-on-3 power-play time for the visitors in overtime.
First year
Matthew Malin saved the lone two shots on goal of the extra session to get the game to a shootout. In the shootout, Nicholas Stevens scored on the first attempt for UW-Stout, but Sewecke kept the Oles alive on a must-score try in the third round. The visitors claimed the shootout when Tristian Therrien scored and Masternak made a pad save in the fourth round.
Malin finished the night with 19 saves for St. Olaf, while Masternak had 21 for UW-Stout. Both teams were 1-for-3 on the power play on the night.
The Oles will head to Concordia-Moorhead for next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series, which will start with a 7 p.m. puck drop on Friday, Jan. 24 at Moorhead Sports Center.
