Men's hockey grabs extra point in shootout after 3-3 tie in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Junior Jonathan Panisa put home the lone goal of the shootout in the fourth round to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team the extra point after a 3-3 tie at Concordia-Moorhead on Friday night at Moorhead Sports Center.

St. Olaf (7-6-3, 2-4-1 MIAC) scored once in each period to build a 3-1 lead before Concordia (7-9-2, 3-4-2 MIAC) fought back late in the third with two unanswered goals to force overtime. After neither team was able to break the tie in the extra session, Panisa fired the puck in off the pipe in the fourth round of the shootout for the lone conversion out of the eight shooters.

Concordia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal by Adam Brown just 2:27 in. St. Olaf responded later in the period when junior Kelijah McElroy batted the puck out of midair at the 12:22 mark after senior Connor Kalthoff wheeled and flung the puck towards the net for McElroy's first goal of the season. Kalthoff picked up his team-leading 11th assist on the goal.

Junior Pavel Karasek gave the Oles the lead by tapping in a rebound at 4:22 of the second period after initially setting up a chance for first year Nicholas Sewecke. St. Olaf survived a major penalty taken with 4:11 to go in the second period to carry the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

After killing off the remainder of the major penalty, the Oles extended their lead to 3-1 early in the third period when first year Panayioti Efraimidis finished off a series of passes with senior Matthew Pointer and sophomore Tony Leahy at the 2:57 mark. Efraimidis' goal was his second of the season.

Concordia struck back with goals from Caden Triggs at 11:26 and Jackson Lucia at 15:09 of the third to tie the game. St. Olaf had three of the game's four shots on goal in the extra session before both goalies held their own in the shootout until Panisa's try. First year Matthew Malin had 19 saves in the tie for the Oles, while Dane Couture had 23 for the Cobbers.

The series finale between the two teams is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25 back at Moorhead Sports Center.
