Four in double figures in kills for volleyball in 12th consecutive win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team stretched its winning streak to 12 matches and remained unbeaten in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 victory over Macalester College on Thursday evening at Skoglund Center.

In a match between the top team and the bottom team in the MIAC standings, Macalester (3-17, 0-6 MIAC) won the first set before St. Olaf (16-6, 6-0 MIAC) rattled off the next three for its seventh win in the last eight meetings in the series. The Oles' 12-match winning streak is their longest since another 12-match run from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, 2010.

Junior Lilah Van Scoyoc, junior Maren Miller, sophomore Mehsa Krause, and junior Evelyn Kreft were all in double figures in kills for St. Olaf, which hit .253 as a team in the win. Van Scoyoc led the Oles with 14 kills and five block assists while hitting .302, Miller and Krause tallied 12 kills apiece, and Kreft added 10. Miller hit .360 on the night, while Krause recorded 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.

Senior Paige Christophersen finished with 27 assists, nine digs, and two aces, while senior Morgan Ryan registered 26 digs, seven assists, and a pair of aces.

St. Olaf surged out to a 5-0 lead early in the first set, but Macalester recovered from the early deficit to win the set, 25-22. After the teams were tied for the seventh time in the set while even at 19-19, the Scots won three consecutive points to build a 22-19 lead. The Oles got within one at 23-22, but the visitors won the next two points to grab the opener.

In the second, St. Olaf again got off to a quick start, winning five points in a row to open up a 6-1 advantage. Macalester got within one twice and was down just two at 20-18 late in the set before the Oles won the final five points, three on kills by Miller. St. Olaf hit .324 with just two attack errors in the set.

The Oles rode their defense to a 25-14 victory in the third set, as St. Olaf held Macalester to a -.031 attack percentage with six kills and seven errors in the set. Van Scoyoc led the way offensively with five kills in the third, which the Oles broke open by closing the set on a 10-3 run.

St. Olaf jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the fourth set on its way to closing out the victory. The Oles extended their lead to as many as 10 at 19-9, but the Scots whittled their deficit down to five before St. Olaf finished off the win.
