NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team dropped all three singles matches that went to a super tiebreak in a 4-3 non-conference loss to UW-Superior in its first dual match of the fall on Friday at Carlson Courts and Tostrud Center.
St. Olaf (0-1) won two of the three doubles matches to carry a lead into singles, but UW-Superior (1-0) won four of the six singles matches – three in super tiebreaks – to come away with the victory. The match started outdoors in near record-high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s before moving inside to Tostrud Center due to darkness.
In doubles, the Oles got victories from the pairings of senior
Bogdan Vizoli and sophomore
Lou Smith and sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf and junior
Marjan Veldic to claim the point. Vizoli and Smith posted a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles before Vanderwerf and Veldic logged a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. With the doubles point already decided, the Yellowjackets won a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, all six matches included either a standard tiebreak or a super tiebreak, but UW-Superior won super tiebreaks at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 5 singles, along with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles to reach the four necessary points. Sophomores

St. Olaf will close out its fall schedule and open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a dual at Concordia-Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 5 at noon at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
