Men's hockey downs Gustavus in MIAC opener behind four-goal first period

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team scored four first-period goals on its way to a 5-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener for both teams on Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Junior Tyler Green scored twice in the opening period and sophomore Adam Johnson also tallied two goals in the win for St. Olaf (3-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC), which held Gustavus (0-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) scoreless until the final eight minutes of the game. The win extended the Oles' unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), as St. Olaf has scored 16 goals over the four-game run.

In a rematch of last season's MIAC Playoff championship game, St. Olaf scored four times in the span of a little over eight minutes in the opening period for the Oles' first four-goal period since the third period of a 7-2 win over Hamline University on Nov. 18, 2023. First year Cody Kempf also tallied his first collegiate goal in the victory.

Gustavus outshot St. Olaf by a 50-17 margin in the game, but first year Ryan Nolan made 48 saves – the most by an Ole in a game since 2017 – to pick up his second victory of the season. St. Olaf was 2-for-4 on the power play in the game, compared to 0-for-6 for Gustavus.

In his first action of the season, Green opened the scoring at 7:14 of the first period, scoring on a backhand from the right circle off an assist from first year Hunter Hayes, who earned his first collegiate point on the goal. A little over two minutes later, Kempf scored unassisted on a breakaway at 9:27 to quickly make it 2-0.

Johnson put home a rebound off a shot by first year Evan Smutney for a power-play goal at 12:09 of the first to push the Oles' lead to 3-0. Green capped the four-goal first period with his second of the period at 15:51, burying a one-timer from the slot off a feed from junior Joey Kennelly. The two-goal game was the first of Green's career.

After a scoreless second period where Gustavus outshot St. Olaf by a 23-1 margin in shots on goal, Wilmer Svensson got the Gusties on the board at 12:15 of the third, but Johnson netted his second power-play goal of the night 2:12 later to restore the Oles' four-goal lead. Johnson's two-goal night matched his scoring output from last season. Svensson finished off the scoring with his second goal in the span of 3:05 at 15:20 of the third.

The series finale is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
