Men's basketball outlasts Northwestern in overtime

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's basketball team outscored the visiting University of Northwestern by a 17-7 margin in overtime to come away with an 85-75 non-conference victory on Saturday at Skoglund Center.

St. Olaf (2-3) shot 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) from the field and 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the five-minute extra session to avenge an 85-58 loss to Northwestern (1-4) 364 days ago. Sophomore AJ Uhl scored eight of his game- and career-high 22 points in the overtime for the Oles.

Uhl shot 8-for-18 from the field and was 5-for-5 at the free-throw line in his second consecutive game with at least 20 points. Sophomore Rex Lamb recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Kobe Kirk added 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. First year Max Kraay and sophomore Luther Tostrud chipped in with nine points apiece off the bench.

The Oles controlled the boards with a 58-41 advantage in rebounding, including pulling down 20 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second-chance points. Sophomore Liam Madigan led the effort on the glass with a career-high 16 rebounds to go with eight points, five assists, two steals, and a block.

Japheth Nyamari led Northwestern with 20 points and seven rebounds despite shooting 8-for-24 from the field. Jonah Burnett finished with 16 points and six rebounds, while Will Foster (11) and AJ Greene (10) were also in double figures in scoring.

Uhl and Lamb combined for 22 first-half points to help St. Olaf to a 43-40 lead at the break. The Oles led by as many as nine in the half on a transition layup by first year Cooper Carlson with 11:01 remaining, but the Eagles quickly countered with an 8-0 run to get back within a point. St. Olaf never trailed in the half but did not score after a Lamb three-pointer with 3:22 to go into the locker room up just three.

The Oles started the second half on a 6-0 run over the first 3:26 to push their lead back up to nine. St. Olaf led by at least four until Northwestern scored six consecutive points to tie the game at 57-57 with 7:26 to go in regulation. A three-pointer by Nyamari with 2:18 left gave the Eagles a 66-65 lead, which they hung onto until a Lamb layup with 27 seconds remaining. After two free throws swung the lead back to the visitors, Lamb split a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

St. Olaf scored on its first four possessions of overtime to build a 77-70 lead, with Kirk scoring four points and Tostrud adding a three-pointer in the first 2:12. Uhl scored the Oles' next six points to push the lead to 10 inside the final minute.

St. Olaf will play its next three games on the road, starting with a 7:30 tip-off at Luther College on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
