Malin makes 56 saves, men's hockey ties Saint John's, falls in shootout

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 14-ranked St. Olaf College men's hockey team got a tying goal from senior Jonathan Panisa late in the third period of a 2-2 tie against Saint John's University before the Johnnies claimed the extra point in the shootout on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

After junior Tyler Green gave St. Olaf (4-2-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) an early lead, Saint John's (3-1-3, 2-0-2 MIAC) took a 3-2 lead into the third period behind goals from Cashen Naeve and Jackson Borst. Panisa scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 5:29 remaining in regulation before Borst scored the lone goal of the shootout in the fourth round for the Johnnies. St. Olaff was ranked No. 14 this week by DIIIHockeyNews and received votes in the USCHO national poll.

Sophomore Matthew Malin kept the Oles in it with a career-high 56-save performance, marking the most saves in a game by a St. Olaf goaltender since Jake Bullard '03 had 60 at Saint John's on Feb. 9, 2002. The 56 saves are also the second-highest total by an NCAA Division III men's goalie in a game this season, one shy of the 57 made by Keene State University's Ben Skelton against Babson College on Nov. 7.

Green put St. Olaf on top at the 7:22 mark of the first period by deflecting a shot from sophomore Wyatt Hickok from the left point for Green's third goal of the season. The assist was Hickok's first collegiate point. Saint John's tied the game at 1-1 after one on a goal by Naeve at 14:35 of the first.

The Johnnies took the lead through Borst's goal at 13:45 of the second period and maintained that lead until the Oles took advantage of a rash of Saint John's penalties in the third. After the Johnnies took three minor penalties in the space of 2:33 of game time, Panisa scored seconds into a 5-on-3 power play at 14:31 of the third off assists from first years Connor Jensen and Hunter Hayes to eventually send the game to overtime.

Saint John's outshot St. Olaf by a 6-1 margin in overtime but could not get the puck past Malin. After both teams' first three shooters were unable to score in the shootout, Borst scored in the fourth round for the Johnnies before Howe made another stop to give Saint John's the extra point.

St. Olaf will exit conference play for a non-conference series at Lake Forest College on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 29-30. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 3 p.m.
