Men's hockey ties No. 12 UW-Superior on Senior Night

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Jonathan Panisa had a goal and an assist to help the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 3-3 tie against No. 12-ranked UW-Superior on Senior Night on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Both St. Olaf (2-1-1) and UW-Superior (2-0-1) scored single goals in each of the three periods before each team generated just one shot on goal in the five-minute overtime. In the shootout, which is meaningless in non-conference games, the Yellowjackets scored on two of their three attempts, while the Oles were unable to score on either of their tries.

The game marked the third consecutive game that went to overtime for St. Olaf, which received votes in this week's USCHO Division III Men's Ice Hockey Poll. The tie moved the Oles to 1-1-1 against nationally-ranked teams this season.

Before the game, St. Olaf honored its five-member senior class of Panisa, Tyler Laureault, Jack Boxer, Gunnar Johnson, and Kelijah McElroy for their efforts and dedication to the program over their careers.

First year Willy Johnson tallied his first collegiate goal at 4:25 of the opening period to give St. Olaf an early lead. First year Jack Matsukubo and sophomore Nick Hatton combined to get the puck to Johnson, who scored from the left circle on a rush to put the Oles on top. UW-Superior tied the game with a power-play goal by Daniel Rozsival at 14:07 of the first period to tie the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes.

St. Olaf reclaimed the lead early in the second when Panisa circled in the offensive zone before scoring with a shot from high in the right circle for his third goal in four games this season. Like the first period, the Yellowjackets got the goal back late in the second, as Matthew Danziger scored at the 15:02 mark to make it 2-2 after two.

For the third period in a row, St. Olaf scored an early goal in the third, as Panisa sped by a UW-Superior skater before sliding the puck across to first year Connor McNaughton, who slid the puck home at 3:47 of the third. Chris Ishmael blasted in a sharp-angle shot at 12:31 of the third period to eventually force overtime.

Both teams had five shots in the 3-on-3 overtime, with Panisa ringing the pipe midway through the extra session for the Oles. UW-Superior scored on its first and third attempts in the shootout. Laureault made 11 of his 25 saves in the third period for St. Olaf, while Kobe Grant had 22 of his 31 saves over the first two periods for UW-Superior.

The Oles will open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against defending conference champion Gustavus Adolphus College next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. puck drop in St. Peter on Friday, Nov. 14.
