OWATONNA, Minn. – First year
Madden Vanderwerf continued the unbeaten start to his singles career with a win at No. 5 singles for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team in a 6-1 loss to Luther College on Sunday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
Luther (4-2), which won the American Rivers Conference regular-season and tournament titles to qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season, swept the three doubles matches and got all five of its singles victories in straight sets. Vanderwerf moved to 9-0 overall in his young singles career with a super-tiebreaker victory at No. 5 singles for St. Olaf (1-2).
The Norse earned the doubles point by winning all three of the matches, with the closest being a 6-4 decision at No. 3 doubles, did not drop a set in its four straight-set singles victories. The closest score line of the five Norse victories was at No. 1 singles where junior
Bogdan Vizoli battled All-American Luke Westholder in a 6-4, 6-3 defeat.
For the second match in a row, Vanderwerf outlasted his opponent in a super tiebreaker, as the first year pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9) victory in the final match on court. Vanderwerf has won all three super tiebreakers he has played this season.
St. Olaf will get back to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action against the College of St. Scholastica on Sunday, March 2 at 4 p.m. back at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
