WAHIAWA, Hawaii – Rising sophomore
Ryan Herbst of the St. Olaf College men's golf team advanced through the local qualifying round for the 2025 United States Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Leilehua Golf Course.
Herbst tied for third in the field of 43 golfers with an even-par 71 before punching his ticket to the next round with a birdie on the first sudden-death playoff hole after finishing in a four-way tie. He shot a one-under 35 on the front nine and a one-over 36 on the back nine in a round that included 10 pars, four birdies, and four bogeys.
The final round of qualifying will take place July 14-30 at 19 different sites across the country. The 2025 U.S. Amateur will be held at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., which is less than one hour from Herbst's hometown, from August 11-17.
Herbst joined the St. Olaf program during the spring semester and averaged 76.3 strokes per round over seven rounds in three events as an Ole in the spring. His scoring average ranked second on the team over that period.
