BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Three St. Olaf College student-athletes were part of the first batch of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week for the fall season, as announced on Tuesday.
Junior
Maren Miller was named the MIAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore
Beckett Carlson was honored as the MIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, and senior
Lauren Walda was chosen as the MIAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week following their standout performances to open the season.
Miller was named to the 10-member All-Tournament Team at the Pacific Coast Classic after recording 33 kills, 14 total blocks, and four aces while hitting .518 in St. Olaf's four matches. The junior had 13 kills and five blocks while hitting .600 in a five-set loss to the seventh-ranked University of La Verne on Friday before tallying 12 kills and four blocks with a .750 attack percentage in a sweep of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges the next day.
In his first collegiate start, Carlson stopped all four shots he faced for St. Olaf in a 0-0 tie against the University of Chicago on Sunday. The sophomore made two saves in the opening 11-plus minutes and two more it eh final 20-plus minutes to keep the Maroons off the board.
Walda was the top individual finisher at the Ole 5K Opener on Friday to lead No. 17-ranked St. Olaf to a first-place team finish. The senior's time of 18:52.3 was nearly four seconds faster than the runner-up.
