Women's soccer eases past UW-Stout to close out non-conference play

MENOMONIE, Wis. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-0 victory over UW-Stout on Wednesday evening at Nelson Field.

St. Olaf (7-1-1) scored twice in the opening 10-plus minutes as part of a four-goal first half and went on to ease past UW-Stout (5-4-1) to improve to 11-1-1 all-time in the series between the two programs. Five different Oles found the back of the net in the win, as St. Olaf, which was ranked No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll, extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1).

Senior Marit Klagge, junior Roxanne Rundle, senior Chloe Valleau, senior Lauren Olson, and sophomore Rachel Anderson accounted for St. Olaf's five goals in the win, with senior Cat Duffy-Shaw collecting a pair of assists. The Oles outshot the Blue Devils by a 19-1 margin overall, including an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Klagge got the four-goal first half started for St. Olaf by outrunning a UW-Stout defender to the ball and firing the ball into the top-left corner of the net in the sixth minute for her third goal of the season. Less than five minutes later, Rundle added her third of the season by slotting the ball past a rushing goalkeeper from the right side of the box after being played in by Duffy-Shaw.

Valleau made it 3-0 in the 26th minute by flicking in a cross from the right from senior Clara Kubis for Valleau's first goal of the season. Olson capped the four-goal half in the final minute before the break, tucking a shot into the lower-right corner after first year Emma Boyle laid the ball back to Olson. The goal was the first of Olson's career, while Boyle picked up her first collegiate assist.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Anderson was the beneficiary of a well-worked move for St. Olaf's fifth goal. Duffy-Shaw started the play by playing a ball in behind for junior Wren VanDeWalker, who slid the ball across for Anderson to slot home for her fifth goal of the season.

Sophomore Ava Williams had just one save to make in collecting her second win in as many starts this season with her first shutout of the year. UW-Stout's lone shot of the game came in the 61st minute by Calli Heinzerling.

The Oles will be back to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 27 with a trip to the College of St. Scholastica for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
