BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Senior
Morgan Ryan of the St. Olaf College volleyball team and sophomore
Ethan Hess of the St. Olaf College football team were honored as one of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, as announced on Monday afternoon.
Ryan was chosen as the MIAC Volleyball Specialist of the Week for the second time in her career, while Hess was named the MIAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time.
Ryan recorded 89 digs (6.36 per set), 13 assists, and five service aces for St. Olaf in three matches against teams that were either nationally ranked or received votes in the national poll to earn a spot on the KTIS Classic All-Tournament Team over the weekend. The senior had at least 25 digs in all three matches, including 35 in a five-set loss to the University of Northwestern and 29 in a four-set victory over No. 17-ranked Millikin University on Saturday. Ryan's work in the back line helped the Oles hold the three nationally-regarded teams to a .160 attack percentage for the tournament.
In his first game as St. Olaf's starting placekicker, Hess was 3-for-3 on field goals and 3-for-3 on PATs in the Oles' 32-7 season-opening victory over Northwestern on Saturday. The sophomore connected on field goals of 21, 42, and 28 yards to account for 12 points, with the 42-yarder matching the longest field goal made by an Ole since 2013.
