BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's golf team posted its second-lowest round ever at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Golf Championships and finished round two tied for fourth place on Sunday at Edinburgh USA.
St. Olaf shot a six-over 294 to finish the day tied with Carleton College for fourth in the nine-team field with 36-hole scores of 606 (+30). The 294 was three strokes shy of the 291 the Oles shot in the first round in 2018 for the lowest round in MIAC Championship history for St. Olaf and was an 18-shot improvement from Saturday's opening round.
Entering the final day of the three-day event, St. Olaf and Carleton were two shots behind Saint John's University for third place and were 24 shots clear of Augsburg University in sixth. The Oles were one of four teams in the field to shoot sub-295 rounds in Sunday's round, which was played in temperatures that reached the upper 80s.
On a day where the average score for the field was just over a 77, all five Oles bettered that mark, led by junior
Will Black's even-par 72. Black strung together three consecutive birdies on holes 4-6 early on as part of a one-under 35 on the front nine. The junior's 72 was two shots off the low round of the day and left Black in fourth place (146, +2) entering the final round.
Senior
Ike Vessey made the third-biggest rise up the leaderboard of anyone in the field by moving up nine spots with a one-over 73 that was an eight-shot improvement from Saturday. The senior exited the day in a tie for 13th (153, +9) after a round that included an even-par 36 on the front nine.
First year
Evan Hovde was part of the five-way tie for 13th that included Vessey after carding a three-over 75. Hovde opened with a double-bogey seven for the second day in a row and was four over through three holes but responded with birdies on three of the final four holes on the front and was one under over the final 15 holes. The first year shaved six shots off his opening-round score with the 75.
First year
Silas Dusenbury improved by eight shots on Sunday with a two-over 74 to end the day in a tie for 18th (154, +10) after climbing four spots. Dusenbury's eagle on hole nine was the first eagle of the tournament for the Oles. Senior
Jacob Brown shot 10 strokes better than Saturday by posting a 76 (+4) to move up five spots into a tie for 27t (158, +14).
Through 36 holes, St. Olaf led the field in birdies (33) and par-three scoring (+9) and was tied for first in par-four scoring (+31).
The Oles will begin their final round with Brown's 10:18 a.m. tee time on Monday, Oct. 12.
