BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – Junior
Will Black secured All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors with a top-10 finish as the St. Olaf College men's golf team finished fifth at the MIAC Championships, which concluded on Monday at Edinburgh USA.
After beginning the day tied for fourth with Carleton College, St. Olaf wound up in fifth after shooting a 308 (+20) in the final round to finish 10 shots behind its crosstown rival. The Oles' total of 914 (+50) was the program's lowest 54-hole score at the MIAC Championships since the 2018 team shot a 903 for the lowest round in program history at the conference championship.
Black became St. Olaf's highest finisher at the MIAC Championships since Ryan Heide '14 was seventh in 2012 by tying for seventh (222, +6) and earned All-Championships Team and automatic All-MIAC honors in the spring by virtue of placing in the top 10. The Oles' fifth-place result gave St. Olaf its first back-to-back top-five finishes in the conference since 2010 and 2011.
Black shot a one-under 35 on the front nine and was in the top five until shooting four over on the final three holes to eventually card a 76 (+4) in the final round. Over the course of the 54-hole tournament, Black was tied for second in the field in par-three scoring (E) and had just one score of double bogey or worse to tie for the fewest in the field.
Senior
Jacob Brown got it going late, finishing with three birdies on his final four holes to match Black with a final-round 76 (+4). Brown's round moved him up three spots to a tie for 24th overall (234, +18).
First year
Evan Hovde and senior
Ike Vessey were part of a four-way tie for 15th (231, +15) after they both posted scores of 78 (+6). Vessey led the Oles with 11 birdies in the tournament, while Hovde was second to only individual medalist Sam Higaki of Carleton College in par-four scoring (+3).
First year
Silas Dusenbury started his final round with a birdie but did not card a birdie after that in a closing 81 (+9) to conclude the event in a tie for 27th (235, +19).
St. Olaf finished its fall season with a scoring average of 303.6, which is on pace to be the program's lowest since at least 2009-10 by over two strokes. The Oles' spring schedule will be posted when it is available.
