VIRGINIA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team won three out of four super tiebreakers in singles but it was not enough in a 4-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) defeat to the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday at Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club.
Senior
Bogdan Vizoli, sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf, and sophomore
Jacob Schultz all rallied from a set down to win their singles matches in super tiebreakers for St. Olaf (2-3, 1-1 MIAC), but St. Scholastica (2-1, 1-1 MIAC) won the doubles point and got the singles split it needed for its fourth consecutive win in the series.
In doubles, Vanderwerf and junior
Marjan Veldic recorded a 6-3 victory at the No. 2 spot, but the Saints claimed the point with wins at the other two spots by 6-3 and 6-4 margins. The win improved Veldic/Vanderwerf's record to 5-2 overall this season, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches and a 2-0 mark in MIAC play.
St. Scholastica got the necessary three points in singles to secure the team win with straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 5 singles and a super-tiebreaker win at No. 3 singles. At No. 1 singles, Vizoli fought back from losing the first set for a 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) victory to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
Vanderwerf picked up his first MIAC singles win of the season with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) win at No. 4 singles, while Schultz got to 2-0 in the conference with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 6 singles in the final match on court.
St. Olaf will head to Decorah, Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 22 for a 2 p.m. match at Luther College.
