OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team eased to a 7-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Saint Mary's University on Saturday at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
St. Olaf (4-4, 3-1 MIAC) won all three doubles matches by at least three games and did not drop more than two games in any of the 12 sets in singles to cruise past Saint Mary's (4-8, 0-3 MIAC). The win was the eighth in a row in the series for the Oles.
Despite switching up its top-two pairings, St. Olaf swept the three doubles matches to grab the doubles point. In their first matches of the season as partners, senior
Bogdan Vizoli and junior
Marjan Veldic posted a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores
Madden Vanderwerf and
Lou Smith logged a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores
Mason Ramirez and
Daniel Meunier recorded a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles as well for their second consecutive victory.
Vizoli, Veldic, Smith, Vanderwerf, sophomore Jacob Shultz, and junior
Cathal Mee all registered straight-set wins in singles, with none of the six dropping more than four total games. Vizoli and Schultz stayed unbeaten in MIAC play (4-0) with their wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while Smith and Vanderwerf got to 3-1 in conference play with their victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
St. Olaf will face nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 21. The match is scheduled to be played on campus at Carlson Courts, weather permitting.
