OWATONNA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team improved to 3-1 in its last four matches with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Bethany Lutheran College on Friday evening at West Hills Tennis and Fitness Center.
St. Olaf (5-5) got a narrow come-from-behind win at No. 1 doubles to take the doubles point and went on to claim four straight-set singles victories to defeat Bethany Lutheran (8-4). Senior
Bogdan Vizoli had a hand in two of the Oles' five points in the win.
In their first match as a pairing this season, juniors
Ryan Birnesser and
Joe O'Flaherty claimed a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles in the first match to conclude. Vizoli and junior
Marjan Veldic followed with 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point for the Oles.
Vizoli put the first point on the board in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the top spot before sophomore
Lou Smith added another with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. After the Vikings won a lengthy super tiebreaker at No. 2 singles to bring the score to 3-1, sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf wrapped up the team result with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore
Jacob Schultz posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles before Bethany Lutheran won another long super tiebreaker at No. 6 singles. Shultz and Smith's wins gave them a team-high seven singles victories this season.
St. Olaf will head to the St. Louis area for four matches over spring break, beginning with a 9 a.m. start at Webster University on Sunday, March 29.
