ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team started its spring break trip with a 7-0 victory over first-time opponent Webster University on Sunday morning at Webster Groves Recreational Complex.
St. Olaf (6-5) dropped just one game in the two contested doubles matches and won all five of the contested singles matches in straight sets to improve to 4-1 in its last five matches. Webster (5-12) had just five available players and had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches as a result.
Senior
Bogdan Vizoli and junior
Marjan Veldic upped their record to 3-1 this season as a pairing with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomores
Lou Smith and
Madden Vanderwerf raced to a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Despite resting its top-two singles players, St. Olaf took all five singles matches in straight sets, with Smith picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win in his first collegiate match at No. 1 singles. Juniors
Joe O'Flaherty and
Ryan Birnesser dropped just two games apiece at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
Vanderwerf took a tight first-set tiebreaker at No. 2 singles in a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory, while sophomore
Mason Ramirez added a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
The Oles will take on Greenville University at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 30 in Greenville, Ill.
