GREENVILLE, Ill. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team claimed the doubles point but was unable to get over the hump in singles in a 5-2 loss to Greenville University on Monday afternoon at Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, St. Olaf (6-6) got wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to grab the lead, but Greenville (9-5) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to pick up the victory.
After the teams split the first two doubles matches to conclude, senior
Bogdan Vizoli and sophomore
Lou Smith gave the Oles the advantage heading into singles by winning a tiebreaker, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles. In their first match as a tandem this season, junior
Ryan Birnesser and sophomore
Madden Vanderwerf notched a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles for St. Olaf's other doubles victory.
Vizoli gave St. Olaf its lone point in singles after his opponent was forced to retire with Vizoli leading 5-3 in the opening set. Greenville won each of the other five singles matches without dropping a set.
The Oles will return to action in a 1 p.m. start at Millikin University on Tuesday, March 31.
