ELSAH, Ill. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team concluded its spring break trip with a 6-1 victory over Principia College on Thursday evening at Hexberg Tennis Center.
St. Olaf (7-7) won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches to topple Principia (2-8) in the first meeting between the two programs. Senior
Bogdan Vizoli and sophomore
Lou Smith teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles and won their respective singles matches to lead the way for the Oles.
St. Olaf wrapped up the doubles point with convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before the Panthers took the No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker. Juniors
Ryan Birnesser and
Joe O'Flaherty moved to 2-0 on the season as a tandem with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles before Vizoli and Smith finished off a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Junior
Cathal Mee put the first point on the board in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot before Smith gave St. Olaf a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 3 singles for his team-leading 10th singles win of the season. After Principia posted a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, Vizoli secured the clinching point with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win at the top spot for his eighth win this season.
Sophomores
Mason Ramirez and
Daniel Meunier completed the 6-1 win with straight-set victories in the final two matches. Ramirez picked up his second win in a row with a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 5 singles, while Meunier locked up his first singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
St. Olaf will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a 4:15 p.m. match at Carleton College on Monday, April 13.
