Treanor wins one-meter dive, two records fall on final day of MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore Izzy Treanor won the women's one-meter diving as the four-day Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships came to a close on Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Treanor became the third Ole in the last six conference meets to win the women's one-meter diving - joining Courtney Miller '17 (2016) and Rose Peterson '18 (2018) - by winning the event with a finals score of 431.00. The sophomore's school-record score was over 12 points ahead of Hamline's Courtney Broyles – the MIAC champion on the three-meter board and the MIAC Women's Diver of the Year – and came after Treanor also had the top score in the morning prelims (417.55).

In addition to Treanor's conference title, St. Olaf had seven all-conference swims on the final day of the team meet, two on the men's side and five on the women's side. At the conclusion of the four-day meet, the Ole women finished third of nine teams with 504 points and the men were fourth of six teams with 410 points.

Senior Sophia Nevin broke her own school record in the 200-yard breaststroke both in prelims and again in the finals while finishing second in the event to MIAC Swimmer of the Year Jordyn Wentzel of St. Kate's, who broke her own NCAA Division III record in 2:10.66. Nevin broke her mark of 2:19.23 with a time of 2:17.99 in the prelims before improving a further six-tenths of a second to 2:17.39 in the finals. The time was a 2019 NCAA qualifying time and ranks in the top 15 in the country.

Fellow senior Maya Knutson also set a school record on the final day of the meet, finishing third in the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA B cut time of 51:42. The time broke the previous record set by Claire Walters '17 in 2017. Knutson qualified second in the prelims in 52.05 seconds before finishing behind Ellen Hofstede (50.10) and Macy Klein (50.63) of St. Kate's in the final.

After finishing fourth in the 100-yard butterfly the day before, junior Annika Cleven was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.95, trailing only Hannah Svendsen of St. Kate's time of 2:07.00. Cleven qualified second in the prelims in the morning in 2:10.86.

Junior Tim Rizzo earned his third All-MIAC accolade of the meet with a third-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:53.03, which was an NCAA B cut. The junior was the defending conference champion in the event and finished behind Matt Strom (15:47.27) and Callen Zemek (15:49.42) of Gustavus.

Sophomore Charlotte Thomson collected the first All-MIAC honor of her career by swimming to a third-place in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:55.16. That time was nearly 50 seconds faster than her seed time of 18:44.48.

Likewise, sophomore Daniel Bloedow picked up his first all-conference accolade with a third-place performance in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.44). The sophomore was fourth in the prelims (1:58.65) before shaving over one second off his time in the finals.

St. Olaf's final all-conference swim of the night came from the women's 400-yard freestyle relay of first year Ellen Varley, Cleven, sophomore Tatum Hauck, and Knutson. Entering the final with the fifth-fastest seed time (3:4.51), the Oles got a strong anchor leg from Knutson to finish third behind St. Kate's and Gustavus in 3:32.86.

Sophomore Marcus Hauck added an Honorable Mention All-MIAC performance in the 200-yard backstroke by placing fifth (1:58.21) and joined Rizzo, sophomore Jaden Chant, and senior Sjon Greseth on the fourth-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:12.44) that also earned honorable mention laurels.

Treanor will represent St. Olaf at the NCAA Diving Regionals in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26. The NCAA Championships will be held March 16-19 in Indianapolis, Ind.
