NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior
Rebekah Salfer of the St. Olaf College women's track and field team finished fourth and first year
Lily Johnson was 11th in the pentathlon as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Women's Track & Field Championships got under way on Wednesday at Carleton College's Recreation Center.
Salfer won both the shot put (10.01m) and 800-meter run (2:33.01) and was second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.75) on her way to the fourth-place finish with a score of 2,900 points. The score was the best of the junior's career and moved her up one spot to ninth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event. The fourth-place showing also earned Salfer Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors in the event.
In the first event of the day, Salfer recorded a personal-best time of 8.75 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, which is tied for fourth in program history in the seldomly-contested event. At Carleton, the event is contested over 55 meters, rather than the traditional 60 meters. Salfer went on to win both the shot put and 800-meter run with personal-best results in both events.
In her first collegiate pentathlon, Johnson registered an 11th-place finish with a score of 2,145 points. The first year logged personal-best performance in the shot put (6.05m) and 800-meter run (2:44.61). Her top finish of the day was a ninth-place result in the 800-meter run (2:44.61) in the final event of the day.
The MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships continue with two full days of action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26. Action in the men's heptathlon resumes at 10 a.m. followed by field events beginning at 4 p.m. and track events starting at 4:30 p.m.
