Lord leads three Ole scorers in MIAC heptathlon

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Demetri Lord led the St. Olaf College men's track and field team's three scorers in the heptathlon with a fourth-place finish as the multi came to a close on Saturday at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships at Carleton College's Recreation Center.

Lord won the 55-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.01 seconds to start the second day of the competition and went on to finish fourth in the field of 15 competitors with a personal-best score of 4,589 points. The sophomore's score ranks third in program history and is in the top 20 in the country.

After winning the 55-meter hurdles, Lord also set PRs in both the pole vault (3.25m) and 1,000-meter run (2:59.43) in the final two events of the grueling seven-event multi.

Senior Nick Edwards finished one spot behind Lord in fifth place with a score of 4,449 points and finished in the top six in each of the Saturday's three events. The senior matched his personal-best clearance in the pole vault, tying for third in the event after clearing 3.85 meters, for his top finish of the day.

Sophomore Woody Rian started the day in 12th place before moving up four spots to eighth (3,827) to score in the event. The sophomore moved up to ninth after tying for ninth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.25) before tying for fifth in the pole vault (3.75m). Rian wrapped up the day and the competition with a personal-best time in the 1,000-meter run (3:09.76).

First year Layton Borst was just behind Rian with 3,792 points to place ninth after rising five spots on the final day of the competition. Borst started his rise up the leaderboard with a PR in the 55-meter hurdles (8.87) before tying Rian for third in the pole vault (3.85m) and running a PR of 3:12.95 in the 1,000-meter run.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. 
– Sophomore Demetri Lord sits second in the heptathlon as five members of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team competed on the first day of the multi as the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Track & Field Championships got under way on Wednesday at Carleton College's Recreation Center.

Lord placed in the top four in all four of the events on the first of two days of the heptathlon, including tying for first in the 55-meter dash (6.63). He added personal-best performances in the shot put (11.10m) and high jump (1.85m) to rack up 2,669 points through four events to sit second of 15 competitors, trailing only Maguire Petersen of Saint John's total of 3,085 points.

Senior Nick Edwards recorded top-five finishes in four of the day's five events, including a third-place finish in the shot put (11.25m). He was also fourth in the high jump (1.82m) and fifth in the 55-meter dash (6.86) to earn 2,479 points.

Sophomore Woody Rian set a PR in the shot put (10.20m) and tied for sixth in the high jump to compile 2157 points, which is good for 12th in the field. First year Layton Borst posted a personal-best throw of 9.95 meters in the shot put and is 14th (2,044).

Senior Stephen Peper was third in the 55-meter dash (6.83) to start the day before having to pull out due to injury. The sprint and hurdles events are contested over 55 meters instead of the traditional 60 meters at Carleton.

The MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships continue with two full days of action on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26. Action in the men's heptathlon resumes at 10 a.m. followed by field events beginning at 4 p.m. and track events starting at 4:30 p.m.
