NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's track and field team won six events in its first full-team meet of the outdoor season at the rainy Manitou Classic on Saturday at Manitou Track.
Competing in off-and-on rain and temperatures in the mid-40s, St. Olaf had five first-place finishes on the track and one more in the field at the unscored meet, which included 10 other NCAA Division III programs, two NCAA Division II programs, and one NCAA Division I program.
St. Olaf swept the top-six spots in the 800-meter run, led by sophomore
Austin McInturff's winning time of 1:58.08. Sophomore
Aaron Ruesink (1:59.33) and first year
Trigg Heimdal (1:59.66) were the next two to cross the line, followed by senior
Zach Martin (2:00.11), sophomore
Garrett Seppanen (2:01.82), and senior
Ignatius Fitzgerald (2:03.49).
Sophomore
Gavin Vogel won the 400-meter dash by over one second with a personal-best time of 49.90 seconds, with classmate
Jakob Eenigenburg in third (51.04). Sophomore
Jackson Bullock and Seppanen logged the top-two times on the day in the 1,500-meter run, with Bullock taking first in a personal-best time of 4:01.29 and Seppanen just over one second behind in 4:02.30.
Junior
Ethan Martel posted a near six-second win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:49.66) and was joined in the top three by sophomore
Micah Larsen-Schmidt in third (10:02.75). Junior
Max Albertson was the lone field-event victor for the Oles, winning the long jump by over two feet with a first-place mark of 6.88 meters (22' 7"). Sophomore
Kale Kardonsky was the runner-up in the shot put (14.62m, 47' 11 ¾") as well.
St. Olaf's two relays both posted top-two results, led by the winning 4x400-meter relay of Heimdal, first year
Aidan McKeever, McInturff, and Ruesink (3:22.89). First year Tony Alli, sophomore
Cristian Escobar Pearson, first year Abe Polzein, and Albertson sprinted to a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (43.25).
The Oles have three meets on the schedule this coming week, with competitors going to the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 15-17), Phil Esten Challenge (April 17), and Carleton Relays (April 18).
