DECORAH, Iowa – The St. Olaf College women's track and field team began its outdoor season by winning three events on its way to a second-place finish at the Norse Invitational on Saturday at Carlson Stadium.
St. Olaf got event wins from junior
Annika Muller (triple jump), senior
Samantha Posey (1,500-meter run), and sophomore
Katie Gebert (800-meter run) to help earn 197.5 points in the team standings, trailing only sixth-ranked Gustavus' total of 221 points in the six-team standings.
Muller started her season by winning the long jump by nine inches with a jump of 5.36 meters (17' 7"), which ranks third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season and fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event. The junior added a runner-up finish in the triple jump, breaking the previous meet record with a mark of 11.16 meters (36' 7 ½"), which ranks third in the conference.
Posey led a 1-3-4 finish for St. Olaf in the 1,500-meter run, breaking the previous meet record by about three-and-a-half seconds with a time of 4:46.44. The time ranks fourth in the MIAC to date this spring. First year
Sofia Carlson was third in the event (4:54.73), while sophomore
Julia Everest was fourth (4:58.10).
Gebert was the top finisher in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:21.40 to win the event by a little over two seconds with the fourth-best time in the conference this season.
Junior
Aleah Keske posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the throws, placing second in the shot put (13.05m) and the discus throw (35.89m). Keske's toss in the shot put broke the previous meet record, ranks third in the MIAC, and is 17th-best in NCAA Division III this spring.
Junior
Sam Hedtke joined Keske in the top-three finishers in the shot put (11.76m) and discus throw (35.77m) by placing third in both events. St. Olaf also got runner-up finishes from junior
Rebekah Salfer in the 100-meter hurdles (15.76), junior
Julia Cordes in the pole vault (2.90m), and sophomore
Riki Poore in the 400-meter hurdles (1:11.12). Salfer and Poore's times both rank fourth in the MIAC.
St. Olaf is next in action at the Lee Krough Invitational at Gustavus on Thursday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
