Women's track and field fifth to start MIAC Outdoor Championships

WINONA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's track and field team got a 3-4 finish in the 10,000-meter run from first years Sofia Carlson and Alison Bode and a runner-up finish in the 4x800-meter relay on the opening day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Saint Mary's Track & Field Complex.

In the final event of the first day of the two-day meet, Carlson and Bode placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 10k with times of 37:17.84 and 37:23.07. The duo finished behind Fiona Smith of Saint Ben's and Clara Mayfield of Carleton, who both owned top-six times in the country in the event entering the meet.

Carlson's third-place finish earned her All-MIAC honors, while Bode picked up honorable mention honors and moved up from 10th to fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event.

With six events scored, St. Olaf is tied for fifth in the 11-team standings with Carleton with 24 points. Saint Ben's leads the way with 39 points, followed by Concordia-Moorhead (34), Hamline (31), and Gustavus (27).

The Oles' 4x800-meter relay of sophomore Olivia Edstrom, sophomore Sophie Call, senior Samantha Posey, and sophomore Katie Gebert recorded a runner-up finish and collected Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors with a time of 9:21.77. St. Olaf trailed only Hamline's time of 9:17.62 in the meet and broke onto the program's all-time list in eighth place with the result.

Three Oles scored in field events on Friday, as sophomore Sam Hedtke was seventh in the discus throw (36.59m), junior Teresa Pettitt-Kenney took seventh in the high jump (1.53m), and sophomore Ainslee Parker placed eighth in the long jump (4.98m).
In addition to the six event finals, 13 Oles earned spots in the finals on Saturday in six different events during the prelims on the track.

110-meter hurdles: Rebekah Salfer (7th, 15.50)
200-meter dash: Karla Kroschel (6th, 26.30)
400-meter dash: Karla Kroschel (4th, 59.05), Olivia Edstrom (8th, 1:00.49)
400-meter hurdles: Riki Poore (6th, 1:08.95), Rebekah Salfer (7th, 1:09.02)
800-meter run: Kristina Rohrer (9th, 2:23.98)
1,500-meter run: Sam Posey (2nd, 5:05.01), Bella Call (3rd, 4:58.11), Katie Gebert (4th, 5:05.05), Sophie Abernethy (7th, 4:59.43), Jane Bruenjes (8th, 5:17.99), Ava Craven (10th, 5:21.51)

Salfer's time in the 110-meter hurdles moved the junior up from eighth to seventh on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event. Posey and Gebert went 1-2 in the second heat of the 1,500-meter run, while Call was the runner-up in the first heat.

Day two of the meet begins with field events at 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. Track events get under way an hour later at 1 p.m.
