NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team had five different goalscorers in a 5-0 victory over the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Sophomore
Shea Bechtel, first year
Robi Buzakovic, and junior
Victor Gaulmin netted first-half goals for St. Olaf (6-3-0, 4-0-0 MIAC) before junior
Casey McCloskey and first year
Dimitri Nair scored after the break. The win over St. Scholastica (3-5-2, 1-3-0 MIAC) was the Oles' 14th-straight MIAC regular-season win dating back to the start of last season and improved St. Olaf to 14-2-2 in the all-time series with the Saints.
Bechtel opened the scoring in the 10th minute, scoring for the third-straight game by volleying in a cross from junior
Liam Vance at the back post after junior
Clemente Arcuch Puig slid the ball into the path of Vance on the left. A little over three and a half minutes later, the Oles doubled their lead when Buzakovic sent a looping shot over the St. Scholastica goalkeeper from outside the box for his second collegiate goal after first year
Ben Beckman won the ball high up the field.
Gaulmin bent a free kick into the lower-right corner of the net in the 35th minute to extend St. Olaf's lead to 3-0 at halftime. The junior has also scored in each of the Oles' last three games.
McCloskey made it back-to-back games with a goal by getting St. Olaf's first of two second-half goals in the 55th minute, tapping the ball in in front after Bechtel got past a Saints' defender in the box and played the ball across to McCloskey.
Nair finished off the scoring in the 82nd minute with his first collegiate goal, as he got on the end of a free kick sent into the box by fifth-year senior
Lucas Gaulmin and fired the ball into the net from close range. The assist was Gaulmin's first of the season.
Junior
Austin Williams – the reigning MIAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week – logged his third-straight shutout with a three-save afternoon for St. Olaf, which outshot St. Scholastica by margins of 24-12 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal.
The Oles head across town to take on Carleton College on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
