Carlson, Muller break school records for women's track and field

NORTHFIELD/MANKATO, Minn. – Senior Annika Muller and sophomore Sofia Carlson broke the school records in the triple jump and 5,000-meter run, respectively, as the St. Olaf College women's track and field team competed at the St. Olaf Coed Invitational and the Mark Schuck Open on Saturday.

Muller broke her own program record in the triple jump at the Tostrud Center, while Carlson shattered the 10-year-old school record in the 5,000-meter run at Minnesota State's Myers Field House in Mankato. The Oles had most of their team compete at their home invitational, while four distance runners traveled to compete in the more competitive fields in Mankato.

Carlson broke the school record set by Emma Lee '13 in her senior season of 17:14.31 by clocking in at 17:05.94 to finish fifth in the highly-competitive field in the 5,000-meter run. The time was nearly 35 seconds faster than Carlson's previous personal-best time of 17:40.2 set at the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Championships and ranks third in the conference this season. Carlson's converted time of 16:58.15 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season.

Fellow sophomore Alison Bode also recorded a top-10 converted time in the country this season at 17:10.20, which ranks ninth nationally. Bode crossed the line in 17:18.09 to place sixth and move up from fifth to third on St. Olaf's all-time indoor list with the fourth-fastest time in the conference this indoor season.

In Northfield, Muller broke her own school record in the triple jump by three inches with a mark of 11.48 meters (37' 8") to win the event by three-and-a-half inches. The senior's jump currently ranks third in the conference and 18th in the country.

Muller's win was one of three for St. Olaf at its unscored home invitational, as junior Katie Gebert won the 800-meter run (2:24.50) and the 4x400-meter relay of junior Riki Poore, first year Abbie Manhard, junior Ququ Holman, and sophomore Emma Storbakken finished ahead of the seven-team field in 4:15.46. Gebert's time ranks third in the MIAC, while the 4x400-meter relay's time is second.

Junior Aleah Keske added a pair of fourth-place finishes in the throws for the Oles. Keske's mark of 13.56 meters (44' 6") in the weight throw moved the junior up from ninth to tied for fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list and was a personal-best throw by over four meters, while her throw of 12.45 meters in the shot put (40' 10 ¼") is fourth in the conference and ranks in the top 50 in NCAA Division III.

Junior Melanie Roberts logged a third-place finish in the pole vault (2.75m, 9' ¼"), while sophomore Emma Johnson rose one spot from 10th to ninth on St. Olaf's all-time list int eh weight throw with a mark of 12.68 meters (41' 7 ¼").

The Oles visit Minneapolis for the Gopher Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 4.
