Oles remain in fifth after day two of MIAC Men's Golf Championships

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's golf team maintained its fifth-place standing on day two of the 2023 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Golf Championships on Sunday at Rush Creek Golf Club.

St. Olaf was fifth after the opening round on Saturday and remained in that spot through 36 holes after shooting a 308 (+20) in Sunday's round, which was played in temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s. Heading into Monday's final round, the Oles are just two shots behind Gustavus Adolphus College but just one shot ahead of Augsburg University and two ahead of Macalester College and Carleton College in the tightly-contested standings.

Junior Josh Sansom put together St. Olaf's lowest round of the day on Sunday with a 75 (+3) to move up one spot into a tie for 11th. The junior had three birdies on his card and was just one-over par before a double-bogey on the par-five 18th.

Highlighted by two-under-par scoring on the four par threes, sophomore Isaac Schmidt shot a 78 (+6) and sits in a tie for 17th. Through 36 holes, Schmidt leads the field in par-three scoring (-2) to help the Oles rank second as a team in the category (+4). First year Ike Vessey recorded St. Olaf's second-best round of the day on Sunday by posting a score of 76 (+4) and is tied for second in the field in par-three scoring (-1) through two rounds.

Vessey sits one shot ahead of senior Tyler Leibl who is tied for 27th after shooting a 79 (+7), while senior Leonardo Acerbi matched Leibl's second-round score and is 41st.

The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. at Rush Creek. Acerbi will be the first off the tee for St. Olaf at 8:50 a.m. followed by Leibl at 9 a.m., Vessey at 9:10 a.m., Schmidt at 9:20 a.m., and Sansom at 9:30 a.m.
