Volleyball meets Concordia in quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Monday

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The third-seeded St. Olaf College volleyball team will host sixth-seeded Concordia-Moorhead in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Monday evening at Skoglund Center.

After securing the No. 3 seed with a strong finish to the regular season, St. Olaf will take on sixth-seeded Concordia at 7 p.m. in the second meeting between the two teams in 10 days. The Oles finished the regular season with a 7-4 mark in conference play, while the Cobbers finished in a three-way tie for fourth but ended up as the No. 6 seed on tiebreakers.

Per MIAC policy, admission will be charged for the MIAC Playoffs. Tickets are $10 for adults and $2 for students with ID. Children five and under will be admitted for free. The St. Olaf Athletic Department will cover the cost of the tickets for St. Olaf students, but students must present their ID at the ticket table. MIAC passes will be accepted, but no other passes will be honored. Live video and live stats will be available for those unable to attend the game.

Monday night's other quarterfinal sees fifth-seeded Bethel University make the short tip to fourth-seeded St. Catherine University in a 7 p.m. start. The winner of that match will advance to take on regular-season champion and top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus College in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The winner of the St. Olaf-Concordia quarterfinal will head to the second-seeded College of Saint Benedict on Thursday night.

St. Olaf is appearing in the MIAC Playoffs for the sixth season in a row and the 14th time since 2000. The Oles own a 15-11 all-time record in the tournament, with the 15 wins being the third-highest total of any institution behind the University of St. Thomas (25) and Saint Ben's (21). St. Olaf, which has won the MIAC Playoffs on three occasions (2000, 2002, 2010), has hosted a match in four of its last five appearances in the MIAC Playoffs and has won all four of those matches.

Concordia is making its first appearance in the MIAC Playoffs since 2016 after appearing in the tournament 16-straight seasons from 2000-16. The Cobbers are 12-14 all-time in the tournament, with their last victory coming in the quarterfinals in 2012.

St. Olaf and Concordia are meeting in the MIAC Playoffs for the third time and the previous two encounters also occurred in the quarterfinals. In 2005, the fifth-seeded Oles swept the fourth-seeded Cobbers in Moorhead and, three years later, fifth-seeded St. Olaf edged fourth-seeded Concordia in five sets in Northfield. In the regular-season meeting on Oct. 27, St. Olaf won the odd-numbered sets to down Concordia in five sets thanks, in part, to a career-high 39 digs from fifth-year senior Selena Rodriguez and a career-high 21 kills from senior Anysia Caille.
