Bode's late push leads to All-America honors in 10,000-meter run

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Alison Bode used a big push on the final lap to earn All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run, as two members of the St. Olaf College women's track and field team wrapped up their seasons on day one of the 2023 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday evening at Polisseni Track & Field Complex.

Bode ran the second-fastest lap of anyone in the entire race on the final lap to move up one spot and grab the final All-America accolade with an eighth-place performance in the 10,000-meter run (35:03.83) in the final event of the night. Earlier in the evening, senior Christine Albrecht finished 15th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:58.43) to close out her career.

After entering the night as the No. 17 seed in the event, Bode ran to an eighth-place finish in 35:03.83 to become St. Olaf's third All-American in the 10,000-meter run, joining Emma Lee '13 (6th in 2013) and Christina Vetter '00 (4th in 2000), while competing as St. Olaf's first national qualifier in the event since Lee in 2013.

The sophomore's time eclipsed Lee's previous school-record time of 35:39.11 by over 35 seconds, as Bode sat 11th at the 5,600-meter mark and fluctuated between eighth and ninth over the final eight laps. Her time of 1:12.917 on the final lap was bettered only by national champion Kassie Parker of Loras College, who was one of three runners to surpass the previous NCAA Division III Championship record. Parker and runner-up Fiona Smith of the College of Saint Benedict both posted top-three times in NCAA Division III history in the race.

Albrecht placed 15th overall and eighth in the second heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:58.43, missing out on the finals by just under eight seconds as the first known St. Olaf national qualifier in the event. The top-four finishers in each heat plus the next four fastest times qualified for the finals on Saturday. The senior closed out her career as the program's all-time record holder in the event after winning the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) title in the event in 10:37.35 this spring.

Bode's eighth-place performance earned St. Olaf one point in the team standings, putting the Oles in a tie for 30th through the five scored events on day one.
