ST. CLOUD/SARTELL, Minn. – Sophomore
Isaac Schmidt put together a top-20 finish to pace the St. Olaf College men's golf team to a ninth-place result at the Saint John's University Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at St. Cloud Country Club and Blackberry Ridge Golf Course.
Schmidt had nothing but pars and bogeys on his card all weekend, compiling 26 pars and 10 bogeys to tie for 20th with a two-day total of 153 (+10). Schmidt's 26 pars were the second-highest total in the field for the weekend.
As a team, St. Olaf was ninth of 13 teams with a team score of 631 (+59) after leapfrogging the University of Manitoba on Sunday to move up one spot. The Oles opened with a 319 (+35) in St. Cloud before shooting seven shots better on Sunday at Blackberry Ridge (312, +24).
Schmidt was tied for 24th after an opening-round 77 (+6) made up of 12 pars and six bogeys before rising four spots to crack the top 20 in the second round. The sophomore had 14 pars and four bogeys on Sunday to make the four-spot move up the leaderboard.
Senior
Tyler Leibl logged St. Olaf's second-best score of the weekend, tying for 33rd with a 157 (+14) that was highlighted by a five-over 77 on Sunday. Leibl had two birdies on the final round to jump up eight spots on day two.
First year
Ike Vessey shot 80 on both days to tie for 45th (160, +17) and had a team-best three birdies on Saturday. For the weekend, the first year was tied for second in the field by shooting one under on the par threes. Juniors
Tyler Cooper and
Josh Sansom were separated by just one shot in a tie for 55th and a tie for 57th, respectively.
The Oles are next in action at the three-day Twin Cities Classic from Saturday through Monday, Sept. 23-25 at three different courses.
