Men's hockey to face top-seeded Augsburg in semifinals of MIAC Playoffs

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The fifth-seeded St. Olaf College men's hockey heads to top-seeded Augsburg University in the semifinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Saturday evening.

St. Olaf (12-11-3) advanced to the semifinals for the third consecutive season with a 3-0 road win over fourth-seeded Saint Mary's University on Wednesday night to earn a spot opposite Augsburg (15-8-2) in the semifinals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Ed Saugestad Rink on Minneapolis.

Per conference policy, admission will be charged for Saturday night's game. Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $2 for students with ID. Children five and under are free of charge. MIAC Passes will be accepted. Tickets can be purchased online here. Live video and live statistics will be provided by Augsburg.

Saturday night's other semifinal sees the third-seeded College of St. Scholastica visit second-seeded Bethel University at 7 p.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the championship game on Saturday, March 2 at the site of the highest remaining seed with the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on the line.

On Wednesday night, St. Olaf improved to 8-0 all-time in the quarterfinal round and picked up its fifth road playoff win in the last three seasons with a 3-0 shutout of Saint Mary's in Winona. Junior Cody Sherman had a goal and an assist in the game, while classmate Thomas Lalonde stopped all 23 shots he faced in the victory. The win evened the Oles' record at 13-13-0 in the MIAC Playoffs and sent St. Olaf to the semifinals for the third season in a row and 12th time in program history.

Augsburg claimed sole possession of its 12th MIAC regular-season championship with a 12-3-1 run through the regular season to earn the No. 1 seed in the MIAC Playoffs. The Auggies, who are the defending tournament champions after winning their sixth title a year ago, are in the field for the ninth season in a row and 21st time in program history. Augsburg has won the MIAC Playoffs in five of the last seven seasons, claiming its six titles in 1998, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023.

Saturday night's game will mark just the third postseason meeting between St. Olaf and Augsburg and will be a rematch of the 2022 championship game. Two years ago, the Oles finished off their improbable run through the tournament as the No. 7 seed (all teams made the playoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic) with a 5-2 win over the top-seeded Auggies in Minneapolis. Augsburg won the only other playoff meeting with a 3-2 overtime victory in the quarterfinals in 2010.

The two teams split their series during the regular season with both teams winning on their home ice. St. Olaf claimed the season opener by a 3-1 score on Dec. 1 before Augsburg returned the favor with a 4-2 win the following night. The Auggies hold a 9-3 advantage in the series since the 2018-19 season, although the teams have split the last six meetings evenly with three wins apiece.
