Ike Vessey recorded the first top-10 finish of his young career to lead the St. Olaf College men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Augsburg Spring Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Keller Golf Course.
Vessey carded a 36-hole total of 150 (+6) to finish eighth in the 46-player field to pace St. Olaf at the eight-team tournament. The Oles compiled a team score of 615 (+39) over the two days with consistent scores of 308 (+20) and 307 (+19).
In Saturday's opening round, Vessey fired the first under-par round of his collegiate career with a one-under 71 that included an eagle, two birdies, and three bogeys to sit one shot off the lead. The 71 was highlighted by an eagle on the par-four eighth that was one of two eagles on the day in the field. Vessey shot a 79 (+7) on Sunday to close out the top finish of his career.
Sophomore
Isaac Schmidt had seven birdies on the weekend on his way to tying for 13th with a two-round 152 (+8). Schmidt recorded three birdies in his 75 (+3) on Saturday and four more in his 77 (+5) on Sunday.
After an opening-round 83 (+11), junior
Josh Sansom put together St. Olaf's second-best round of the tournament with an even-par 72 in the second round that included five birdies. Sansom finished in a tie for 18th with a 155 (+11), which was three shots ahead of senior
Tyler Leibl, who tied for 24th at 158 (+14) with consecutive rounds of 79 (+7).
Next weekend, the Oles will head to the Bobby Krig Invite at New Prague Golf Course and Le Sueur Country Club on Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21.
