COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Senior
Andrew Cogley of the St. Olaf College men's track and field team earned all-conference honors with a third-place finish to lead four Oles in the heptathlon to begin the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday at The Donald McNeely Spectrum.
In the final event of the two-day competition, Cogley won the 1,000-meter run to vault up to third place and claim All-MIAC honors with a score of 4,558 points over the seven events. That score was a personal best by 80 points and moved the senior up one spot to fifth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the heptathlon.
Cogley entered the 1,000-meter run in fourth place and 44 points out of the All-MIAC spots but gained 10 seconds on the third-place competitor heading into the event with a time of 2:46.52 to move into third. The senior established personal bests in the long jump (6.36m), high jump (1.88m), and pole vault (3.60m) and was in the top four in four of the seven events.
Sophomores
Gavin Hoelzel,
Jesse Olson, and
Will Lapinski also competed in the seven-event competition, with Hoelzel and Lapinski posting personal-best scores. Hoelzel finished 10th (4,157) with PRs in the shot put (9.46m) and pole vault (4.10m), Olson was 13th (3,626) with PRs in the long jump (5.73m) and shot put (9.14m), and Lapinski was 15th (3,581) with PRs in the 60-meter dash (7.72), long jump (5.60m), and pole vault (2.70m).
The rest of the MIAC Indoor Championships are under way on Friday, Feb. 28 at Saint John's and will conclude on Saturday, March 1 beginning at noon.
