Women's soccer opens with 4-0 shutout of UW-Eau Claire

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored quick-fire goals in both halves on its way to a 4-0 victory over UW-Eau Claire in its season opener on Friday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Seniors Katie Beaudry and Marit Klagge scored 68 seconds apart midway through the first half before junior Emily Johnson scored twice in the span of exactly one minute early in the second half to give St. Olaf (1-0-0) its largest opening-day win since a 7-1 victory at Grinnell College on Sept. 1, 2009. The victory came after a 90-minute lightning delay that began with 15 minutes remaining in the warmup.

The Oles took all 10 of the game's shots in the opening half and took a 2-0 lead into the break thanks to Beaudry and Klagge's goals. Beaudry opened the scoring by heading in a corner kick from senior Cat Duffy-Shaw in the 23rd minute before Klagge turned in a cross from junior Roxanne Rundle 1:08 later to quickly double St. Olaf's advantage.

In the second half, Johnson scored twice in the first three minutes to balloon the Oles' cushion to 4-0, finishing off through balls from sophomore Avery Sames and Klagge for the second two-goal game of her career.

St. Olaf limited UW-Eau Claire to five shots and one shot on goal over the 90 minutes, as first year Charlotte Percy claimed the shutout victory in her collegiate debut. The Oles also had eight of the game's nine corner kicks.

To complete opening weekend, St. Olaf will host fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m.
