BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Junior
Evelyn Kreft and sophomore
Alec Mahoney of the St. Olaf College volleyball and football teams were chosen as one of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, as announced on Monday.
Kreft was honored as the MIAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while Mahoney earned MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week honors, with both Oles being recognized for the first times in their respective careers.
Kreft registered a team-high 33 kills (3.00 per set) while hitting .212 on the outside for St. Olaf in the Oles' 3-0 weekend at the Carleton/St. Olaf Invitational. The junior had a career-high 15 kills and hit .355 in a five-set win over the University of Chicago, which received votes nationally, on Friday before adding 13 more in Saturday's sweep of No. 1-ranked UW-Whitewater.
Mahoney recorded a team-high eight total tackles (five solo), 1.0 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble, and the game-sealing interception for St. Olaf in Saturday's 17-16 victory over Concordia-Moorhead. The sophomore's forced fumble came with the Cobbers approaching the red zone in a 3-0 game late in the first quarter. With St. Olaf clinging to a one-point lead and 1:00 remaining in the game, Mahoney picked off a first-down pass to secure the Oles' first win over Concordia since 2011.
